International mobility for PhD
We are delighted to welcome Maite Izco Cubero, recipient of an incoming mobility grant, for a 3.5-month research stay (in 2026) at the RMeS Laboratory (Nantes Université).
Project title: Marine Biomolecules in Anti-Aging Medicine: Evaluation and Development of Therapeutic StrategiesDescription of the project: Age-related musculoskeletal disorders, including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, sarcopenia, and intervertebral disc degeneration, are major causes of disability in older adults, yet effective therapies remain unavailable. Among the hallmarks of aging, cellular senescence plays a pivotal role in driving degenerative processes and age-related diseases. In this context, senolytics (agents that selectively eliminate senescent cells) have emerged as a potential therapeutic strategy, although their efficacy and safety are still under evaluation. Marine-derived peptides have already shown promising results by modulating mechanisms linked to aging. This project aims to evaluate the therapeutic potential of marine-derived biomolecules as senolytic or senomorphic agents. Senescence models were established using C2C12 myofibroblast and CHON-001 chondrocyte cell lines, while marine compound libraries were screened to identify candidates that demonstrated protective effects against senescence. To enhance translational relevance, future work will employ primary cultures of human articular chondrocytes at Nantes University to better model osteoarthritis pathophysiology.
Congratulations to Maite Izco Cubero for this achievement and welcome to Nantes!
