Language preparation and certifications

Whether you are preparing for a period of study abroad or looking to strengthen your CV, Nantes Université offers a wide range of opportunities to practise and develop your language skills.

Language workshops and courses

La pratique des langues étrangères The University Language Service runs courses in more than 10 languages, with two flexible formats to choose from:
  • Summer Campus: Make the most of your summer break with an intensive language refresher course. Classes take place at an intensive pace in June.
  • Evening Campus: More of an evening person? You can follow between 12 and 18 hours of language classes, spread across the first or second semester.
Courses are tailored to your level and your goals, and may include beginner or advanced sessions, conversation workshops, certification preparation, or preparation for studying abroad.

E-Learning

Prefer to learn at your own pace? You can use the 7speaking e-learning platform, which offers up-to-date content in English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. To prepare for a language certification, you can also practise using Global Exam.

Throughout the year, the Language Resource Centre also offers:
  • Multilingual activities and social events (clubs, games, film screenings)
  • Print and digital language learning resources
  • Cultural exchanges with international students through the Univ Buddy scheme or e-tandem language partnerships
  • Collaborative study spaces
  • Personalised guidance and advice

Language certifications

Do you need a certification in German, English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French, Italian, or Portuguese, whether to complete your degree requirements or to apply for a study abroad programme? Certification is strongly recommended, and may be compulsory for certain destinations, particularly in North America (TOEFL).

Have your language skills officially assessed through a recognised test covering a range of written and/or oral competencies. You can then use your certification result freely, both in your academic and professional life.

A language certification is a genuine asset for your career, and in some cases it is a requirement, including for engineering students, undergraduate and master's students, and participants in certain international mobility programmes.
