Ahead of World Philosophy Day (21 November), the UNESCO Chair in Philosophy Practices with Children, led by Nantes Université, is organising an international event on new philosophical practices on 19 and 20 November 2025. More than 300 participants from around the world are expected to attend and discuss a particularly topical theme: commitment.

Every year, the UNESCO Chair in Philosophy Practices with Children holds its International Meetings on New Philosophical Practices (RINPP) in a French or European city. Organised in Le Mans in 2023 and then at the UNESCO House in Paris in 2024, the event will this time be held in Nantes in autumn 2025 (19 and 20 November). Free and open to all, these meetings will bring together researchers and professionals from the worlds of education,non-profit and culture from all over the world to exchange ideas, share knowledge and learn from each other's experiences.

Over two days, in the heart of the Île de Nantes (Halle 6 Ouest, Nantes Université), these meetings will offer several presentations, practical exercises and workshop demonstrations (programme to be confirmed). An exceptional round table discussion on philosophy in the field of engagement will also be held in the evening of Wednesday 19 November.

Among the first guests announced are:

  • Philippe MEIRIEU, professor emeritus at Lumière-Lyon-II University and honorary doctorate holder from the Free University of Brussels and the University of Montreal. He has taught at all levels of the school system and has been involved in numerous discussions and reforms of the French education system.
  • Camille FROIDEVAUX-METTERIE, professor of political science and philosopher. She is a specialist in feminist thought. Her research focuses on issues related to women's bodies from a phenomenological perspective that situates them between objectification-alienation and emancipation-reappropriation.
  • Guillaume DURAND, senior lecturer in philosophy (bioethics) at Nantes Université, president of the Committee on Ethics, Professional Conduct and Scientific Integrity (CEDIS). He is also director of clinical ethics consultation at the Saint-Nazaire Hospital Centre.

Commitment as a key feature of the 2025 edition

In a world facing multiple crises and profound technological revolutions, the question of our commitments – political, ethical, collective and personal – is more pressing than ever. This is why the RINPP wanted to make commitment the central theme of the 2025 edition. What place can philosophy occupy in the field of commitment? Why and how can we democratise access to philosophy with a humanist and democratic aim? During these two days, these questions will be at the heart of discussions and debates.

A UNESCO Chair at the heart of these meetings

Since 2016, UNESCO and Nantes Université have been home to the world's first and only Chair specifically dedicated to the practice of philosophy with children and teenagers. Led by Edwige Chirouter, professor of philosophy and education sciences at Nantes Université (Inspé) and affiliated with the Centre de Recherche en Education de Nantes (CREN), this chair aims to help develop these civic practices through research, training, the dissemination of educational tools in schools and the city, and dialogue between stakeholders and children around the world.
